Employers need to prepare their businesses now for the possibility that a large proportion of their staff will be unable to attend work due to Swine Flu. GMA Consultants have launched a newsletter covering key things that employers should be thinking about now (see Library).
The Cabinet office are considering extending the period of Self Certification to 14 days for sufferers of Swine Flu. This will mean that staff will not feel under pressure to return to work before they are fully recovered and will also put less strain on GP practices. Recent figures for FirstCare (an absence management company) however suggest that on average staff are taking just 4.3 days off work. No final decsion has yet been made by the Government.
